152 vs 144 Tiles: The Mahjong Count Question, Answered

Comparing mahjong sets with different tile counts

One of the most common questions we get from buyers is also the most expensive one to get wrong: how many tiles are in a mahjong set? The answer depends entirely on which game you're playing. Here's the count table we use on every order — and why "152-tile set" needs a second number before it ships.

The count is locked by the rule system

Mahjong isn't one game with one set. Each regional rule system uses its own tile count, because each game needs different tiles:

Rule systemPlay countNotes
American Mahjong152Includes 8 jokers and 8 flowers/seasons
Chinese National Standard144108 suits + winds + dragons + 8 flowers
Hong Kong / Cantonese136144 minus the 8 flower tiles
Singapore & Malaysia148136 core + flower & animal tiles
Vietnamese144+8144 standard + 8 King & Ghost cards

A 144-tile Chinese set won't play American mahjong — there are no jokers. A 136-tile Hong Kong set won't play the Chinese national game — the flowers are missing. The count is the first thing we pin down on every order, before a mold is cut.

Why "152-tile set" isn't the full story

Here's where two numbers get confused:

  • Play configuration (152): the tiles you actually use to play — including the 8 jokers.
  • Shipped count (160–166): what the factory puts in the box — the 152-tile configuration plus spare tiles, so a set always has enough for play even if a tile goes missing.

So a "152-tile American set" usually ships with 160–166 tiles. If you're a reseller, decide which number matters for your listing and your market — and confirm it in the spec sheet so the product matches the description.

⚠
The expensive mistake. Ordering "144 tiles" for an American market, or "152" for a Chinese one, produces a batch nobody can sell. That's why we build by rule system, not by country — the count locks automatically.

What to confirm before you order

  • The rule system you're selling into (this decides the play count).
  • The shipped count you want on the box and in your listing.
  • The tile size — as full length × width × thickness, not a single number.

Every spec sheet we send lists all three. Get them right once, and every reorder is automatic.
